Cullman, Alabama is located about half way in between Birmingham and Huntsville, AL on I 65. The town was founded in 1873 by Colonel Cullman who was a German refugee. It wasn’t long before other German immigrants flocked to the area. They then built St Bernard’s Monastery, which is home to Ave Maria Grotto. Ave Maria Grotto is known for its 125 miniature reproductions of some of the most famous religious structures of the world. It and Lewis Smith Lake are Cullman’s 2 main tourist attractions. There are many beautiful homes on Smith Lake. The eastern most part of the lake is located in Cullman. This area is one of the most convenient areas of the lake. It is very close to restaurants and shopping and it offers the easiest access to I 65 from the lake.
